When it comes to the type of media we consume, i.e., movies, shows, books, news, social media, etc., women – especially women of color, are often excluded. Through this exclusion, we, as audience members, are left without the opportunity to hear more of their vital voices. The following 15 women are taking back the narrative and paving the way towards creating more inclusive communities within the media.
Focused on racial and gender inclusion in filmmaking, Ava DuVernay is one of today’s leading filmmakers. Best known for her work on Netflix’s 2019 miniseries, When They See Us which follows the 1989 Central Park jogger case, this writer, director, and producer knows how to bring important issues to the forefront of all her work. With her own film distribution company under her belt, this is a filmmaker to watch for in the future.
