Growing up in neighborhoods and communities where we see families like ours solidifies our sense of understanding and self-confidence – and when we connect with people who look like us, sound like us and understand our stories, we feel safe and empowered to be our true selves.
Though media may serve as a mere reflection of our real stories, it can often be a place we turn when our surroundings don’t seem to encapsulate our experience. And while the impact of diversity in live-action movies and television shows is perhaps more readily apparent, animated programming is a critical piece of the media landscape that needs just as much work.
